Fall End of Semester Information for Residents

Choose from these options for end of semester information for your situation:

Housing Contract Update Period:
Although your Housing Contract is for the full academic year, you have the option to update the meal plan if your needs have changed by going to housing.unm.edu by November 30th. Spring Option Room Changes:
You can apply to move to a different hall or room for the spring semester by completing a Spring Option Room Change Request at your residence hall front desk by November 30th.
  • Approvals will be based on projected availability. Approval letters will be posted in SRC Mailboxes by December 4th. If approved, you will move out by December 15th and check into your new room after January 17th, unless you are moving within SRC/RVA. Current SRC/RVA residents moving to another room in SRC/RVA will move December 16-18.

SRC and RVA Apartment Residents Returning for Spring Semester
The apartment style residence halls remain open during the winter recess. You will keep your keys and you may come and go during the break. Be sure to complete the assigned task on your end of semester cleaning sheet posted on the refrigerator.

Things to do if you will be gone for an extended period:
  • Secure your valuables
  • Close and lock your windows
  • Close the drapes or blinds
  • Empty the trash
  • Leave the heat on a medium setting
  • Turn out the lights
  • Close and lock the door

Special HEATING INFORMATION for SRC:
Please be sure to close your windows ALL THE WAY when you are gone. Because the heating units are under the window, it is possible for the unit to FREEZE AND BREAK, flooding the entire apartment. This has happened several times in the past because the frigid air flows through the window, down over the unit and freezes the pipes. This can be prevented by keeping the bedroom and living area windows closed all the way whenever you are gone.

Temporary Residents in SRC:
A limited number of temporary residents from traditional halls will be re-assigned to vacant rooms in SRC for the break. They will check out and return to their traditional hall assignment on January 16th.

Mail handling:
The SRC Commons and the mailroom will be open during the recess. You will keep your key for the recess and you can check your mail if you are in town.

For more information, please refer to the Residence Hall Handbook, pages 27-30, or contact the Residence Life staff.

Coronado, Alvarado, SA, SC, LDV, Hokona Residents Returning for Spring Semester
The traditional style residence halls will be closed and secured Sunday December 16th at 12 noon. Be sure you have everything you will need for the winter recess because access will be very limited until the residence halls reopen on January 17th.

Since you are returning to the same room for the spring semester, you will keep your keys, you can leave your belongings in the room, your posters up, etc..

We do ask that you do the following before you leave:
  • Take everything you need for the break
  • Dispose of perishable food but leave refrigerators plugged in
  • Secure your valuables
  • Close and lock your windows
  • Close the drapes
  • Lock your closet
  • Empty the trash
  • Leave the heat on a medium setting
  • Turn out the lights
  • Close and lock the door

Mail handling:
The SRC Commons and the mailroom will be open during the recess. You will keep your key for the recess and you can check your mail if you are in town.

For more information, please refer to the Residence Hall Handbook pages 27-30, or contact the Residence Life staff.

Students NOT living in the residence halls for the Spring Semester
If you are planning not to live in the residence halls for the spring semester, you must move out and check out of your room by December 16th. Be sure to do the following:

  • Complete a contract release in writing at Housing Reservations by November 30th Schedule an appointment to check out with your RA by December 5th (Check out appointments will be December 8-16)
  • Move all your belongings out
  • Clean your room (and assigned area of apartment if in SRC or RVA)
  • Complete the check out process:
  • At the scheduled appointment time, meet the RA at the designated place
  • You will return to your room with the RA
  • The room (and apartment if SRC or RVA) will be inventoried by the RA for damages, missing items and cleaning
  • After the inventory, you will give the RA your keys (so be sure everything is moved out before your appointment time)
  • The RA will also take your mailbox key and a forwarding address

Residents who do not vacate by December 16th will have their possessions boxed and stored and be charged extras fees for improper check out, boxing and storing, cleaning, and lock changes.

Approved for Spring Option Room Change
The spring option room change process is logistically very difficult to manage, and we ask that you follow these instructions very carefully. Failure to follow the instructions may result in your room change being cancelled.

If you have been approved for a spring option room change, please do the following:

Moving from apartment style room (SRC/RVA) to apartment style room (SRC/RVA):
Because your housing contract includes the winter recess, we will try to arrange for you to move from one room to another approximately December 16-18. Your room change approval will include specific information. If you do cannot complete your move during the time, you may also complete the room change process by completely moving out of one room and checking into the new room when you return.

All other moves:
You will completely check out of your room and turn in all keys except your mailbox key by December 16. You will then check into your new room after January 17 when the residence halls reopen for the spring semester.

If you have any questions, please contact your current residence hall supervising Student Head Resident or Area Coordinator.
